5G has become one of the common technologies that we can use in our daily lives and that improves the way we connect to the Internet. But operators continue to improve the technology and make it available to everyone. Now, Vodafone in Spain has carried out the first 5G pilot in the new 26 GHz millimeter band to test its commercial use in smartphones.

5G gives us all kinds of advantages and now Vodafone has carried out the first pilot in the Spanish market whose purpose was to test the capabilities offered by 5G frequencies in the 26 GHz millimeter band and has achieved encouraging results. The tests are being carried out with pre-commercial phones and in collaboration with different manufacturers.

Up to 430Mbps

Vodafone has carried out the tests in Alameda de Osuna in Madrid and has managed to test the capabilities of 5G frequencies in the 26 Ghz millimeter band. The tests have resulted in great speeds: download speeds have been reached above 2 Gbps and upload speeds have been above 430 Mbps on the commercial network. To achieve this, pre-commercial smartphones have been used in collaboration with technology partners and different chipset manufacturers.

As explained in the communication offered by the operator itself, the engineers have added different combinations of carriers to achieve the maximum possible speeds using all the available spectrum with a range of more than 1 kilometer with line of sight to the antenna from its headquarters to the point where the smartphones were located.

Other tests

This would have great advantages in many types of events. We could ensure that mass events such as concerts or football matches had better capacity or speed when connecting to 5G. And this is where the operator plans to test the band’s performance to offer the enhanced capabilities of its 5G services to customers. In addition to testing in other specific areas such as shopping areas, busy transport stations or university campuses. Also, Vodafone wants to use private mobile networks for real-time multimedia broadcasts or for very specialized uses such as drone control or their management, egaming or increasingly frequent real-time broadcasts by of companies or individuals.

Vodafone continues to test how to improve the 5G network that millions of customers around the world already enjoy and assures that it seeks to “improve the resilience of economies, accelerate the country’s digital transformation and continue digitizing critical services.”

Use 5G

For now we can use 5G as long as we have a compatible operator, such as Vodafone, in addition to having coverage in a specific area and having a mobile phone that is compatible with this technology. Vodafone’s 5G coverage is available in most cities in Spain and we can connect from any provincial capital practically without any problem as long as your smartphone is compatible.

5G coverage in Spain

It gives us better speeds, offers us better coverage and reduces latency. It is a matter of time before it increasingly offers us greater advantages that we can enjoy from our phone.
