When we buy a new mobile, before we have even downloaded any app, we can verify that it already has a few pre-installed related to the operating system. One of them may be Carrier Services, a mysterious app that does not make its functionality very clear.
If you have it installed and it bugs you, we are going to tell you what it is for and what you can do with it. Then you decide if you keep it or not.
What Carrier Services does
Carrier Services offers services that allow you to use chat functions for example in the Google Messages application. Obtains diagnostic and fault data to ensure services are running smoothly, and collects and shares data to provide RCS messaging capabilities.
This allows operators to make use of rich text messages through the GSMA network, that is, the same one we use to call and send SMS. Instead of being plain text, it could be formatted enhanced text with features like those found in WhatsApp and other messaging apps via 4G/5G, such as sending emojis, group messages, and sharing audio and images.
The RCS standard refers to “Rich Communication Service” or “Enriched Communication Services”. It is basically an agreement between Google and different manufacturers to create a new method of sharing information through the use of GSMA networks. This would make it possible to chat and use messaging applications through conventional mobile networks without the need for Internet or data rates. We will still need a connection to consult social networks or browse, but for messaging it would not be necessary.
Carrier Services was launched in 2017 with the idea that RCS could unseat WhatsApp, Telegram and other messaging apps that need an Internet connection. However, over time it has been proven that it has not been as successful as it should be. What Carrier Services does is prepare your smartphone so that, when your operator decides to implement this standard, you can use it without having to change your mobile. In addition, RCS also allows operators to take over the data generated by their enriched messages without being deducted from the subscribers’ rates.
Can you uninstall it?
In most new mobiles this app is already installed by default, or it may also be installed automatically with system updates. If you want to uninstall it, nothing will happen if you delete it. As we have told you before, this app is only related to the RCS messaging service, so if you don’t use this communication standard there is no problem if you decide to get rid of it.
After all, the RCS standard has not had a boost and you will probably use WhatsApp, Telegram or other alternatives. The application barely occupies 10 MB and its operation has no impact, so it is not too bothersome to have it there in the background. And if you didn’t have it and want it, you can download it at the Google Play Store link that we leave you above.
