The American Logan Sargeant will almost certainly be the main driver of Williams F1 in 2023, as confirmed by the team boss, Jost Capito, but at the moment they cannot announce it; Sargeant still has to score the necessary Super License points to make the jump to Formula 1.
The Williams F1 team has wanted to confirm the driver who will accompany Alex Albon in the 2023 season at the weekend of the United States Grand Prix. And it has done so… but only halfway. The Grove team has announced in Austin that American Logan Sargeant will get a starting seat next year, provided he gets the super license points he needs.
Next season there will be an American driver in Formula 1 for the first time since Alexander Rossi competed with Manor in 2015. Logan Sargeant, born in Florida in 2000, will make the jump to the premier class with Williams F1 as long as he finishes , at least, in fifth place in the Formula 2 classification.
In the absence of an appointment for the end of the course, Sargeant is in third position in the championship, and Williams F1 bets on him. Without going any further, just yesterday, the American completed the first free practice session in Austin with good feelings.
On Saturday afternoon, Williams announced that Logan will also take part in Free Practice 1 in Mexico and Abu Dhabi, as well as the Abu Dhabi Young Driver Test.
At the team bosses’ press conference, which followed the announcement, the Williams F1 team boss confirmed that if Sargeant gets the points needed to achieve the superlicence, the 21-year-old American will become Nicholas’s replacement. Latifi.
Looking at the results achieved to date by Sargeant, he would have to go through a very bad weekend in the last F2 race in Abu Dhabi not to achieve the 40 superlicence points he needs. If he doesn’t manage to finish fifth in the championship, he might even be worth sixth if he doesn’t get any penalty points, as this would give him two extra points.
“He has been in F2 for a season and I am in favor of bringing young drivers as quickly as possible to Formula 1,” explained Capito. “In his first year in F2 he has won races and has been qualifying very strongly all these years in his career. We think he is absolutely ready to come to F1.”
Sargeant has scored two wins this year on his Formula 2 debut, in Great Britain and Austria. He is 29 points behind Théo Pourchaire, second in the championship, and more than 100 behind champion Felipe Drugovich, who does not have a seat for 2023 and will have to settle for being an Aston Martin F1 development driver.
