Carlos Sainz conquers pole position at the United States Grand Prix and tomorrow he will fight for his second victory in the premier class.
Carlos Sainz has conquered the ‘pole position’ of the United States Grand Prix after completing a brilliant final lap in the qualifying session at the Austin Circuit. The Spaniard beat Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen by just a few thousandths. Tomorrow he will fight to achieve his second victory in the queen category.
Fernando Alonso has been ninth, but will lose five places to change engine. Charles Leclerc, Sergio Pérez and Guanyu Zhou are also suspended, so the grid will vary slightly.
Carlos Sainz began leading the classification of the United States GP with a time of 1:35.297, with which the Spaniard from Ferrari surpassed his teammate Charles Leclerc by almost half a second and Max Verstappen by a few thousandths more. Fernando Alonso, seventh, passed without problems to the second part of the classification.
The differences in the fight to overcome the cut were very tight. Alex Albon managed to get through to Q2 by just 17 thousandths of an advantage over the first eliminated, the Danish Kevin Magnussen, who could only be sixteenth. Along with the Haas driver, Daniel Ricciardo, Esteban Ocon (Alonso’s partner), Mick Schumacher and Nicholas Latifi also fell.
On the lap of the track for Q2, Ferrari again topped the timesheets, although this time it was Charles Leclerc fastest with a time of 1m35.246s, narrowly beating Sainz’s time from the previous session. The Monegasque led Verstappen by a few thousandths and his partner by three tenths.
Alonso managed to get through to Q3, again achieving seventh position, which helped him to be the best of the rest again. Things were worse for Alex Albon, Sebastian Vettel, Pierre Gasly, Guanyu Zhou and Yuki Tsunoda, who were eliminated.
Sainz beats Leclerc and Verstappen to achieve pole position
Verstappen was the first of the favorites to set the time and take the lead, with a time of 1:35.044, although the Dutchman used used tyres. Charles Leclerc, with new tires, beat Verstappen’s time by four tenths and, moments later, Carlos Sainz (also with new tires) crossed the finish line to place second, one tenth behind his teammate.
Carlos’ result was especially important, since Leclerc had ten penalty positions for changing engine and turbo, and could ‘inherit’ pole. Alonso, after the first fast lap with used rubber, was in seventh place.
The last lap was decisive. Verstappen, Sainz and Leclerc nailed their times sector by sector. Leclerc did not improve, but Carlos did, after setting a time of 1:34.356, with which he surpassed his teammate by 65 thousandths. Verstappen, despite the fact that he had been improving, failed in the third sector and could not beat the Madrid driver, who achieved his third pole position.
Sergio Pérez qualified in fourth position, followed by Lewis Hamilton and George Russell. Lance Stroll, with the Aston Martin, surprised with a brilliant seventh place. Lando Norris was eighth, with Fernando Alonso ninth (although tomorrow he will lose five places due to changing engines) and Valtteri Bottas tenth.
