Mercedes improves F1’s safety car.
Mercedes has unveiled its new safety and medical cars for the 2022 Formula 1 season. For yet another year, the German brand will share this important function with Aston Martin at the various events on the premier class calendar. Bernd Mayländer is once again the driver of the F1 safety car.
The German brand has updated the model that will act as a safety car. The vehicle that we will see appear in the event of an incident will be the Mercedes AMG GT Black Series, a spectacular sports car with no less than 730 hp thanks to its powerful four-liter V8 biturbo engine.
The AMG GT Black Series is capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds and can reach up to 325 km/h. On the outside we find important innovations with respect to the previous model, since now the lighting of the safety car goes from being on the roof to being integrated into the upper part of the front windshield and in the rear.
The medical car, on the other hand, is once again the Mercedes AMG GT 63 S 4MATIC +, capable of developing up to 510 hp.
Both vehicles play an important role in the grand prix, since the safety car is in charge of neutralizing the activity on the track in the event of an accident to protect both the participants and those involved, and the medical car provides assistance to those who have suffered a strong impact.
The two cars retain both the aesthetics and the performance of the street model on which they are based, although they have undergone changes both inside to improve safety and to house the technical equipment necessary for communication between the driver, co-driver and the FIA.
The exterior, as can be seen in the images, has also undergone a series of adaptations, especially in the security lighting.
“I am very happy to be back behind the wheel of the Formula 1 safety car for the 2022 season. And I am especially happy that this year it will be a Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series,” said Mayländer.
“I have already had the opportunity to test drive this amazing vehicle many times and I am simply blown away by how close it is to a real race car. It really is a significant step up from last year’s GT R, which was already at a level extremely high. Having a workplace like this in the name of safety is a dream come true,” he adds.
