The truth is that telephone scams in which the identity of different operators are impersonated are not new. But, the latest scam is already bordering on the absurd. And basically, they try to make customers believe that, through a Movistar white label, they will be able to enjoy great rates and services, when, in most cases, these are operators that are from another group or even no longer exist.

There are more credible phone scams, but others are far from reality. However, there are users who are unaware of the situation of current telephone companies and fall into the trap of this type of calls.

The latest scam tries to gain customers by offering to port to another company, since they make users believe that they are going to continue with the same company. And all, because according to these teleoperators, they will be in a white label or subsidiary of Movistar (or another operator). The problem is that they offer operators that no longer exist, as is the case with Tuenti. However, the problem does not end there, since they can also impersonate other telephone companies, so this is one of the many examples with which they can try to scam you.

Get ports

FACUA has already warned of the latest scam attempt that many clients are suffering. In these cases, what they intend to achieve is portability to other operators, and all with the intention of making potential victims believe that they will continue to be with the same telephone company.

The scam begins with a call from a supposed Movistar teleoperator who informs the customer that they will receive a series of discounts due to deficiencies in the quality of the Internet connection. Furthermore, during the conversation, the teleoperator also shows that ‘Movistar is a large company that works with its private labels’, and in this case, indicates that they are O2, Tuenti and MásMóvil.

MásMóvil fiber optics

To begin with, Tuenti closed its doors in April 2022. And, on the other hand, MásMóvil belongs to another group, along with Yoigo (among other telephone companies). The only one that is part of Telefónica, along with Movistar, is O2. Therefore, the deception borders on the absurd, but the truth is that they can manage to deceive those clients who do not know this information.

And if the possible victims question why they do not make that same offer within Movistar, the teleoperators argue the following: “when, due to the length of service that Movistar has with us, it does not charge a customer with the discount applications, it tells us the system that we apply through one of our subsidiaries.” Even for people who are pensioners or have been with the company for more than 5 years, they show that this discount cannot be applied for these reasons and can only be applied through one of those supposed Movistar subsidiaries.

Therefore, if you are a Movistar customer and you receive a call with these characteristics, do not fall into the trap. The best thing you can do is hang up. Furthermore, FACUA explains that this same telephone scam can occur for clients of other operators, so they can impersonate different telephone companies. So, if you have doubts, it is best to hang up and call your operator’s customer service number if you want to clear up any doubts.
