The rise of streaming platforms has led many users to turn their free time into a space for entertainment, spending long hours watching series and movies in front of their devices. Over the years, video-on-demand applications have emerged in abundance, so there is a choice between one and the other. But there is one in particular that Spaniards prefer above all others for consuming content.
OTTs in Spain are easily penetrating most homes. In fact, a report by the consultancy firm GECA recently revealed that Amazon Prime Video is the streaming app with the largest market share in our country, even above other major apps such as Netflix, Disney+ or Max. This is largely due to the fact that Amazon includes this service if you pay the fee as a prime customer for free shipping from its online store, but that’s another story.
To stay on topic, let’s focus on the new audience bulletin published by the audiovisual and digital consultancy Barlovento Comunicación, in which we can see that there were substantial changes in the consumption preferences of the main streaming platforms during the past month of July.
Online users and most viewed content
As can be seen in the study, the total number of unique users who have connected via multiple devices (television, tablet, mobile phone and computer) has been 36.7 million, which represents 94.2% of the population coverage. Also, the average per individual of consumption was 5.9 platforms and the total number of unique users per day has been identified.
As for the most-watched content, we find that Aquí no hay quien viva has the highest number of views, specifically 5.2 million unique viewers across the Netflix, Prime Video and Atresplayer platforms. Meanwhile, El caso Asunta on Netflix was the second most-watched production, with 5 million, and Los Bridgerton, also on Netflix, reached third place with 4.8 million viewers.
Which streaming platform do Spaniards use the most?
The research carried out by the consultancy firm therefore breaks down the global top 10 of millions of unique viewers who have used the most popular streaming tools during July. The results show that YouTube leads the list with 28.2 million users who have consulted the platform, which represents 72.5% of the total.
Instagram is in second place, with 21.6 million and representing 55.4%. Close on its heels are Netflix and Prime Video, with 20.5 and 20.4 million viewers, respectively. Spotify rounds out the top five most-streamed platforms last month, with 14.1 million.
It’s not far-fetched to think that YouTube continues to dominate the ranking, as it is an application with free access to a wide variety of content that other OTT services do not include today. In this case, you can follow your favorite influencers and YouTubers and play videos as you like. Of course, you will pay for advertising if you are not subscribed to its YouTube Premium plan.
