Second only to Volkswagen.
The Stellantis Group surpasses Tesla in sales of electric cars in Europe and becomes the second manufacturer that has placed the most battery-powered vehicles on the market in the old continent, behind Volkswagen.
The automobile conglomerate has taken stock of the first six months of 2022 and the results speak clearly: in total, it sold 105,413 electric cars, compared to 78,277 for Tesla. For its part, Volkswagen, which is placed in first position, sold 116,307 units.
Stellantis overtakes Tesla in electric car sales in Europe
During the first six months of the year, the group sold 32,315 electric utility vehicles, which represents an increase of 72% compared to the same period in 2021. The electric Fiat 500 leads Stellantis sales, as it was the best-selling electric car in Italy and Germany in the second quarter of the year.
Another model that is reaping notable success is the Peugeot e-208, which accumulated a total of 21,918 units sold in the first half of the year, and is also the best-selling compact car in France. His brother, the Opel Corsa e, also achieved good sales figures: 13,380 copies from January to July.
Looking ahead to the coming months, Stellantis could improve its records with the arrival of the electric versions of the Peugeot 308, the 3008 and the Opel Astra, models that could lead the group to crown the ranking of electric car sales.
Tesla sales fall
Tesla’s quarterly numbers fell to their lowest levels in two years, but that’s largely due to plant closures, not a lack of customer interest.
Even so, the Tesla Model Y continues to be the best-selling electric car in Europe, with 39,969 units in the first half of 2022, followed by the Model 3 which, with 38,280 units, suffers a 25% drop, compared to the same period of 2021.
Elon Musk’s company hopes to pick up sales in the second half of the year, now that China has largely lifted the COVID-19 restrictions that forced production to stop.
