The DTT Technical Plan, which among other things included the imperative jump to HD quality, was extended and its entry into force was delayed, but it will finally begin to be applied on February 14 at the latest. However, it will not be necessary to wait for Valentine’s Day for all the channels to suddenly go from SD to HD, but there are already movements in some of them and deadlines are being shortened.
DTT, unless 4K Digital Terrestrial Television begins to be a widespread reality, will at least have a notable quality improvement with the mandatory step to high definition. However, not all television networks want to wait for the last day and prefer to get ahead of the mandatory date and thus avoid any type of problems.
The regional channels make a move
The regional channels are the first to report on the deadlines that have been set to stop broadcasting in standard definition (SD) to do so only in high definition (HD).
For example, one of the earliest risers in 2024, taking into account that the deadline is February 14, will be TV Canaria. The Canarian regional channel currently broadcasts in both SD and HD, so it had part of its homework already done. Radiotelevisión Canaria has reported that the SD version of its channel will cease broadcasting next Tuesday, January 16, from which date only Televisión Canaria HD will be able to tune in.
The regional channels of Castilla y León on DTT have also reported on plans to turn off the SD channels and begin broadcasting only in HD. Once again, they will anticipate the deadline set by the DTT Technical Plan, although they will do so later than their Canarian counterparts. Specifically, they have been informed of the plans of La 7 of CyLTV and channel 8, which were already broadcasting simultaneously in HD and SD. On this occasion, Castilla y León Television has reported that the date of turning off the signal in standard definition will be next Tuesday, February 6, the day from which only the HD version of those two regional channels can be tuned (also for the Leonese regional channel La 8 Bierzo).
What do I need to watch DTT HD?
To be able to watch DTT starting February 14, 2024, the date on which the Technical Plan fully enters and all channels will be broadcast exclusively in HD, you will need to have a receiver compatible with the DVB-T2 standard.
These acronyms may not sound familiar to you, but chances are that you already have one integrated into your Smart TV, taking into account that any television purchased from 2015 onwards has this tuner by regulation, so it is estimated that more than 98% of The devices are already compatible, according to figures from the Ministry of Digital Transformation. Therefore, as of February 15, when all the channels have already taken the step, the only thing that would be required would be to retune so that the HD channels appear in cases in which they were not yet broadcasting, so that the SD versions of many others and rearrange the channels to our liking.
