Uber wants to go from being a mobility app to a mobility superapp
The company has held its annual Go-Get event in which it advances the main lines of its business plan for the following months. On this occasion, it has drawn attention that there has been no announcement about advances in the field of autonomous driving or delivery robots as it has done in previous editions. Uber faces a new business phase in which it announces important changes to ensure its future.
The company wants to break its image as an “on-demand travel platform” to become a “platform for everything” according to statements collected by Business Insider Spain during the event held in New York.
The Amazon of mobility
During the Uber event, the first words of the company’s CEO drew attention, stressing that he had not come to talk about Artificial Intelligence (AI), but about products “built by humans and for humans.”
Judging by what was announced at the event, it seems that the future of Uber lies in offering more daily services and not so much in being a pioneer in the development of technology. Its next moves are aimed at becoming a mobility superapp, a challenge for which the CEO of Uber, Dara Khosrowshahi, is very clear in which mirror they should look: the goal is to be “the Amazon of mobility.”
Autonomous driving is no longer a priority
Those who follow the advances of Uber for being a pioneer in technology have missed the allusions to advances in autonomous driving applied to delivery work at the company’s last event, which was one of the central themes of Go-Get 2022. Uber’s autonomous robots have been running in test phase on the streets of Miami. At the moment, there is no news that the company plans to test them in Spain.
There has also been no news about Uber’s autonomous cars. The people in charge of the company have not explained the reasons for this apparent slowdown in the development of driverless robotaxis, although there are voices that point out that, in part, it is due to the legislative slowness that means that in many countries, Spain among them, the Driving without a driver is very limited.
