When it comes to security software that we can install on our devices, there are several options that we can use. There are free and paid options, and the programs offered by Kaspersky have been among the most popular in the sector for some time.
However, this is a company that has been involved in major controversies on more than one occasion, especially on the other side of the pond. What’s more, we can now confirm that security products from the aforementioned Kaspersky will be banned in the US. This will happen as of September 29, 2024.
The truth is that the US government has always been very wary of these issues. Throughout 2024, the US has been looking at which foreign apps it allows within its borders. An example of this is the bill to ban TikTok due to fears that the app would act as a data collection tool for China.
Well, now, due to the war in Ukraine, sanctions against Russia and fears of espionage, products from the aforementioned Kaspersky are directly affected. More specifically, the United States stopped selling these antiviruses on July 20. Now, starting September 29, Kaspersky software will no longer receive updates.
Basically, this means that American citizens have only a few days to stop using this antivirus and look for other alternatives. Otherwise, their computers will be completely unprotected, since security software that is not updated is actually useless. Therefore, the antivirus software from the aforementioned Russian company will no longer protect American computers, even if they remain installed.
What will happen to Kaspersky in Spain and other countries?
At this point, many regular users of this security company may be wondering whether the ban will be extended to other regions, including Spain. It should be noted that last June the Russian company sent a statement defending itself against the accusations of espionage launched by the North American country.
It claims that for more than two decades it has protected computers around the world without carrying out any malicious action. In parallel, the company claims that the US ban is due more to the current geopolitical situation than anything else. We already know the suspicions of the North American country regarding these movements related to espionage.
What we want to say with this is that this ban or block is unlikely to be extended to most countries. Therefore, it is almost certain that if you have been using Kaspersky antivirus for some time, especially if you have paid for the security solution, you can rest easy. Some kind of leak or scandalous discovery would have to occur for other countries to carry out the same block and ban.
For the moment, this ban is limited to the US and is unlikely to be implemented in other regions, at least as long as the situation remains as it is at the moment.
