Microsoft is working hard to make the Windows 11 operating system to everyone’s liking, which is why it keeps making changes and implementing new features. This time, a new feature has been introduced that, unless there is a surprise, will satisfy all owners of a computer with this platform. They don’t always hit the nail on the head, but this time it is more than guaranteed.
In recent months we have seen Microsoft make a large number of changes to the most important elements and areas of its Windows 11 operating system. The company is testing things and, in some cases, it does not achieve particularly positive results. If we talk about the Start menu, this is something that has been repeated on several occasions.
A wise decision
We have already talked about many of the changes that have been implemented in the Start menu and, generally, the results are not usually good. We have seen how Microsoft’s operating system included new features that were far from what was attractive. That changes with this new update that has already been seen in the Insider version of Windows 11, which confirms that the company has undoubtedly made a good decision.
This is important news, since, in an inexplicable way, the Start menu had become one of the least applauded elements of Windows in recent months. A lot has happened since the first versions of Windows, where the Start menu surprised and pleased everyone. To try to recover those sensations, Microsoft introduces a shortcut grouping system that is wonderful.
Now it’s more comfortable
What we ask for from the Start menu is that it be comfortable, fast and very customizable. We are not very fond of having advertising either, but that is a topic for another time. What we are talking about now is this new option that has been introduced with the intention of allowing us to see the shortcuts we have on the computer organized by categories.
This allows us to have them, for example, grouped into a section for entertainment applications, music, navigation or maps, and development tools, among others. There is also a junk drawer section where all the programs that do not fit into any possible group are gathered. The display, with the cell design with the icons in a visual form, is comfortable and most satisfactory, being a good way to give the Start menu an injection of value.
What you might be wondering is what happens when a category has more than four apps, since that seems to be the limit that can be displayed within this layout. Normally, you might not have that many apps of the same theme (or maybe the opposite), but in this case, what happens is that the fourth icon becomes a “more” shortcut. So, as you can see in the image above posted by Windows Latest, three of the apps have their own separate icons, while the fourth icon is a mix of four different app icons.
We’ll have to see what customization options are provided and see how Windows 11 reacts if you have a large number of apps within a category. We may have to wait, and the bad news is that it’s hard to know when. As it’s within the Insider version, it should reach all users in the future, perhaps with the Windows 11 24H2 update that will arrive soon. For now, it’s recommended to be patient and celebrate that, at least, it seems that Microsoft has found a way to give the Start menu a nice addition.
