NAS servers are one of the most demanded equipment in recent years by home users, mainly due to their versatility and all the possibilities they offer us. Not only will we be able to set up our own private cloud with a really high storage capacity, but we will also be able to perform much more advanced tasks such as virtualizing operating systems, setting up Docker containers to enjoy hundreds of applications in a very simple way, and of course , manage all multimedia content such as movies or series and watch them on our Smart TV. Although at first, the purchase of a NAS may be a fairly large investment, having to buy both the NAS itself and also the hard drives to store all the information, in the long term it is much more worth it than having a service cloud storage, because we will not have to pay a subscription on a monthly or annual basis. Next, we are going to give you a couple of examples where we can see the price from one year to four years, to know the amortization period of the server.
How much is a home NAS with hard drives worth?
We are going to take as an example a QNAP TS-262 NAS server, a model with an Intel Celeron N4502 Dual-Core processor at 2.0GHz speed but that can reach 2.9GHz, it has a hardware encryption engine to provide the best performance when we use data encryption. This model has a GPU integrated into the processor, so we also have hardware-accelerated transcoding. The RAM memory is 4GB maximum capacity. This model features 2 SATA3 hard drive bays, as well as two M.2 NVMe slots for use as SSD cache or ultra-fast storage array. As for connectivity, it has a 2.5G Multigigabit port, two USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports at 10Gbps type A, two USB 2.0 ports and also an HDMI port with 4K output. Finally, we have a PCIe 3.0 x2 port to optionally expand connectivity. QNAP states that this NAS consumes about 13W in normal operation mode with two hard drives installed.

As for the hard drives, we have chosen two Seagate Ironwolf hard drives of 6TB each, to configure it in RAID 1 and have a total capacity of 6TB but with the guarantee that if one breaks, we will not lose the data anymore. that we have it in mirror. The price of each disc right now is around €155, although waiting for good offers the price will be lower.
The total price of the NAS (€450) and the two hard drives (€310) amounts to €760, a fairly significant figure at first.

However, we must bear in mind that a NAS is much more than creating a private cloud in our home, we will not only store the files, but also many other uses:
